ASAP Destitution Awareness Week
4th - 8th December 2006

ASAP believes that everyone is entitled to adequate housing and support and is committed to helping destitute asylum seekers get the NASS support they are entitled to.

ASAP want to highlight how important it is that asylum seekers get good legal advice so we are running a Destitution Awareness Week between Monday 4th December and Friday 8th December. For one week we want to try, advise and represent every person who has a NASS appeal. Barristers, solicitors and practitioners are joining us at the Asylum Support Adjudicators where NASS appeals take place to help us do this.

If you want more information on Destitution Awareness Week or if one of your clients has an appeal between 4th and 8th December 2006, please contact ASAP. If you want to know more about NASS appeals or if you want to observe a NASS appeal please contact us on 020 8684 5873.

ASAP AGM “Destitute asylum seekers – what’s happening?”
2 Nov 06, London

ASAP is holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday 2 November 06 at Amnesty Human Rights Centre in central London from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. If you would like to attend our AGM, please use the form here to confirm your attendance. Please click here for the map.

We are delighted to welcome Helana Ismail (Horn of Africa Community Group, London Refugee Voice) and Simon Cox (Barrister, Doughty Street Chambers) as our guest speakers.

Helana will talk about the impact of destitution on Somali community and how the community is responding to this problem. Simon will give us the latest updates on asylum support law, especially in relation to section 4 (Hard Case) support for Kurdish “failed” asylum seekers from Iraq. There will be a panel discussion on destitute asylum seekers chaired by Sue Willman (ASAP Chair) afterwards.

All our members, refugee community organisations, voluntary advisory agencies and other supporters are invited to celebrate ASAP’s achievement during the last year. We look forward to seeing you. (updated on 12 Oct 06).
